COASTGUARD WANAKA

WANAKA

THE PROJECT

The Coastguard in Wanaka was operating out of a building, too far away from Lake Wanaka to quickly respond to emergencies. They applied to construct a building closer to the edge of the lake and Ely Point north of Wanaka township. Ely point is part of the Lake Wanaka Outstanding Natural Landscape and is a highly valued recreation reserve. This successful application will see the speed of Coastguard’s response to maritime emergencies increased by approximately 15, lifesaving minutes.

OUR ROLE

Patch was the lead landscape architect and designer on this project. We consulted with the client, Council and the community over several years to determine the most appropriate location for the Coastguard building. Patch designed the landscape around the building in a way which will meet the imperatives of the Coastguard, council, the community, and nearby residents. Patch prepared evidence and presented that evidence at a resource consent hearing. The proposal was approved, and the Coastguard is currently seeking funding for the construction.
